Are chronic migraines keeping you from living a healthy life? Do you feel discouraged and overwhelmed when you get a migraine? If migraines keep you bedridden or painkillers don't help, you may benefit from looking into complementary and alternative methods.

Migraine headaches can be debilitating and they can keep you from getting things done. Migraine headaches typically cause a throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of the head, and they might also be accompanied by things like nausea or vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound.

Migraines can last for days, causing you significant pain and discomfort to the point that they start ruining your life. If you get severe migraines, you may need to lie down and rest, which isn't always convenient.

While the exact cause of migraines is not known, they may start with an underlying central nervous system disorder, be caused by hormonal changes, or triggered by either neurological or biochemical events, all of which affect the brain's blood vessel or vascular system.

Migraine headaches often progress through four stages, although you may not actually experience all of these stages.

The Four Stages of Migraines:

  1. Prodome
  2. Aura
  3. Headache
  4. Postdrome

The first stage, the prodome stage, might occur one or two days before you get a migraine, causing subtle changes. Some of these changes are constipation, depression, hyperactivity, food cravings, a stiffness of the neck, irritability or even uncontrollable yawning.

The second stage, the aura stage can occur before or even during a migraine headache. This might involve flashes of light, visual disturbances, speech disturbances or even movement or motor disturbances. Some typical examples might be seeing various bright shapes or flashes, loss of vision, feelings of pins and needles, or aphasia or language or speech problems. Symptoms usually begin gradually lasting anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.

The headache stage obviously involves getting the migraine headache. Migraines can last anywhere from 4 hours to 72 hours and their frequency varies. You might get migraines at the same time each month, or less often.

During a migraine, you might experience blurred vision, pain or throbbing on one side of the head, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea or vomiting or even dizziness.

The final stage, the postdrome stage occurs after the migraine attack, leaving you feeling drained or washed out.

Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, so you should always consult with your doctor to rule out any severe medical conditions. However, once the pain has served its purpose, and you have taken those steps to medically manage the problem, there is no more need for you to continually experience pain.

Don't let the pain of migraines ruin your life; take those steps today to overcome migraines naturally. It is possible to live your life free of migraine pain, and you can learn to manage that pain using mindfulness techniques.
