Understanding the Moon in the Houses

In a nutshell

If you take a look at your chart- your moon is going to look, well, like a little crescent moon. This is my partner’s chart- and as you can see, it is in the 8th house, Scorpio. We look at the inner wheel to see the house and the outer to see the zodiac sign.

The moon shows us where you are more a creature of habit, more emotional, and how you best nurture. Now, if you look at your own chart and you happen to have the Sun or your Ascendant in either Taurus or Cancer: it may be an even more deeply embedded part of who you are, emotionally. Of course, as with most planets in charts: the more aspects your Moon has, the higher the importance of that particular house. You’ll note in the chart above- Kurt’s Sun is in Taurus. Therefore, the Moon, aspects to it and that 8th house is something I would look at with a bit more heft than many other parts of his chart. We won’t go into Kurt’s chart, though, I just bring it up because it happens to be a good example of this.

The Moon in the Houses

We discussed houses in a previous astrology lesson, and now we’re going to have a look at how the Moon and your emotions are impacted based on which house it’s found in, natally.

1st house

Seeing the Moon in the first house usually indicates someone who’s a bit of a moody drama queen. ( Says the girl with her Sun square Pluto. Believe me, I say this with love.) Because this indicates emotions that can be incredibly intense, it is often difficult for people with the Moon in their first house to make decisions and they can be very insecure. Because they tend to go more towards self-consciousness, they are also remarkably sensitive and may worry a bit more about the way others see them more than they should. Moon in this first house people also has a strong tendency towards giving into unconscious desires- which makes them restless and a bit wild. Being able to express their own unique personalities and have that accepted by others is very important.

2nd House

With the Moon in the 2nd house, people tend to tie their emotions to their possessions. Emotional and financial security are very closely tied and building a stable home is key. With this particular aspect, people find that their finances tend to go back and forth- mostly due to them doing so. A tendency towards being incredibly intelligent with their money and then making impulse buys can sometimes be problematic. It is very important for someone with this aspect to find fulfilling work as this is a strong part of their identity. One of the best things about this placement, however, is an excellent sense of humor. Though routine is not something they care for- they can handle it well as long as they are able to express themselves- usually via writing.

3rd House

Going into the 3rd house is pretty weird, because it’s one of those houses that people just don’t place a whole lot of emphasis on: though, they should. This is the house that rules communication, those things around you- from your neighbors to your brothers and sisters, and transportation. This also deals with your lower mind and how you think about things, as well as your formative educational environment.

4th House

Individuals with the Moon in their fourth house have a very strong sense of family ties. Home is very important to them and understanding their roots, where they came from, and ancestry may help them to not only feel in touch with that- but, also, give them confidence. They feel that security is vital and tend to seek that out through connections to family and home. Generally possessing strong desires to build their own home front- they aren’t usually the most social types once they do settle down.

5th House

People with the Moon in the fifth house have a strong desire for romance and will be very protective of children. Carrying some intense emotions, they have a tendency towards trying to feed those feelings- usually through some form of expression. They seem to almost always be looking for that next great “feel good” thing and may indulge themselves in pleasure seeking activity or attempts at getting the spotlight. They are also usually fairly talented in terms of acting or any form of creative work- so, this does work out for them at times. One of the downsides of this particular aspect is that it tends to come with a need for drama, but, leaning more towards the more positive intense emotional experiences.

6th House

People who carry the Moon in their sixth house are generally extremely considerate, awesome co-workers and really, all around team players. They do best in careers where they can feel that they are helping others and tend more towards being worry warts. Balancing this sort of thing will help that a great deal- and working on things that they can feel proud of does tend to ease those feelings as well. It is highly important that people with the Moon in the 6th house have a strong work-life balance as there is a tendency towards overdoing it at work.

7th House

The Moon in the seventh house is a really nice aspect as it does act as a sort of draw towards more sensitive people. This is a very nurturing aspect- though people with this placement certainly do need that nurturing in equal measure to that which they give. They may have problems with love because they’re looking for someone who will be that sort of “end all be all” and due to their sensitivity- they attract quite a few possible partners. Having a tendency to put people up on pedestals is a bit of a problem for people with this aspect- but, once they do find the right partners, they practically enter a state of bliss.

8th House

A Moon in the eighth house tends to indicate someone with a deep need for security- but, also indicates great jealousy and often possessiveness. This happens due to a sometimes overwhelming about of self-doubt that can be difficult for these people to open up about. Feeling vulnerable is hard for them- but it is something deeply needed in order to have the stability they seek. People with this placement also tend to have a great curiosity about things and are often a bit more sensitive to cues others miss.

9th House

I have a bit of a soft spot for people with the Moon in the ninth house. They tend to be such brilliant dreamy types- inspirational, in fact. This is a little problematic for them as being content can often elude them- naturally philosophical, they seek out all the answers they can find. 9th house Moon types tend to be very high-minded and are wonderful teachers. Finding a deep security in thought and exploration- their greatest satisfaction is in seeking out new horizons.

10th House

This one hits me in the feels- I’ve got a 10th house Moon, Leo, in fact. Double whammy. With a Moon in the 10th house, ambition tends to carry a lot of angst with it: it is deeply tied to their emotions. These people tend to go through many different careers because they do tend to be talented and charismatic- but they also have a strong drive towards social responsibility and an even stronger desire to express their unique individuality. This can often be hard to balance because controlling their emotions is actually an act of will.

11th House

People with the Moon in the 11th house tend to be very likable people, though they often veer towards friendships with women. They enjoy a sense of belonging- and when they feel out of place, they can become very insecure. Very sensitive people, they also are quite aware and react well to the emotional needs of others. They tend to prefer doing things for the greater good rather than acting on selfish desires- and networking is vital to their success in life.

12th House

People with the Moon in their 12th house do tend to be a bit more secretive and private than most. They’re pretty careful about the way that they interact with others and can seem a bit unreadable. They often feel a strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability- but unfortunately, if engaging with the wrong sort of people can be taken advantage of because of this. A deep need to serve others and help in a healing capacity is preferred, and they tend to shy away from attention for the same.
