Living With Seizures

For those living with seizures, life can be very challenging. Countless medications, trips to the doctor and more, might not even make a difference. Doctors estimate that about one to three percent of the population has some form of epilepsy, a common cause of seizures.

Seizures typically last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes and they involve shaking and convulsing. Those who get seizures may also experience other strange symptoms as well including things like seeing colors or visual images, smelling strange scents, or engaging in odd behaviors like lip smacking or fidgeting.

It is a misconception that those with a seizure disorder cannot practice meditation. The seizure threshold is often reduced when one is deeply relaxed. Since meditation reduces stress and produces more neurological stability, the practice of meditation can be very helpful.

Practicing meditation can also help you enjoy better health, lower levels of stress, healthier relationships and even a calmer, more focused mind.

Seizures can be caused by many things including:
•  Epilepsy
•  Neuronal activity in the brain
•  Abnormal signals from the brain

The brain actually controls how the body reacts and moves, through the sending out of tiny electrical pulses or signals through the nerves to the muscles. Convulsions or seizures occur when abnormal signals are sent from the brain, and out to the body.

Through the usage of mind-body therapies like meditation, those who suffer from recurrent seizures may find that meditation is very helpful when it comes to controlling those seizures.

Meditation has been proven to be very beneficial to health, so there is no reason why is cannot also be used to manage seizures.

Using mind-body techniques you can be a powerful co-creator in your own healing process as you envision your brain rebalancing itself to a healthier state of mind. The fact is you can use your mind to heal your body, because whatever you focus on comes about.

In the book "The Hidden Messages in Water" Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that when positive words and prayers were used, that water crystals reflected this appreciation by forming beautiful, symmetrical shapes.

In other words, by focusing on the positive and focusing on healthy brain chemistry, you may, in fact, be able to reset your brain, so that you can manage seizures more effectively.

If you have a concern when it comes to alternative and complementary approaches like meditation - you should always check in with your doctor. Some find a practice like meditation incredibly relaxing and effective while others may find that it is not.

Each of lives in a stressful world, and for those suffering from recurrent seizures life can be even more stressful. Any time spent in relaxation and contemplation is beneficial for anyone, especially for those with recurrent health problems.
